Mostly Happy by Pam Bustin
Mostly Happy by Pam Bustin is an awesome book about a young girl seeking happiness through various obstacles in life. It is about a mother and her daughter Bean who go through different kinds of challenges and must overcome bad situations in their life since Bean's father leaves them. She grows up watching her mother being very involved in abusive relationships. She was always aware of her mother's relationships with the many different guys but never told her mom about her inner feelings about her interactions. She happily accepts her second father and her little new born sister. Furthermore, she fulfilled her responsibilities of taking care off them when her mother is not able to.
However, slowly she turns around from her hard time and decided to live a new life by herself. As she said in the text, "I spend half of my life yelling at God". The quote reveals that Bean wants to start a new life. It tells us that no matter how hard our past may be it is there is always time to embark in a new life for the good. Pam Bustin uses this novel and the character of Bean as a letter to the world and the people in it. She uses the determination and perseverance of Bean to show us that we can help ourselves. Things can ALWAYS change: but only if we want it to.
The best thing about this book is the ending. After all the heartache, the pain and the sorrow, Bean states, “God came”. Bean was able to find the hope and the courage to go on. She was glad “someone was in charge”. After running away from her problems her whole life Bean finds peace after the storm and finds the will to go home and help the people the storm has hurt. I think we all want a beautiful ending; this book shows us that we can.
