Grade 9's class trip to downtown toronto with the Italians
9:14 AM | Posted by Team2010
Hey King, Mr. Bodor's grade 9 Geography class went on an amazing trip yesterday. They went to the CN Towere, saw the heart of Chinatown, walked around Kensigton market and even saw Little Italy. It was an amazing trip. The food in Chintown was delicious, most of the students had bubble tea. Don't let the name confuse you though, it has absolutely no tea in it but it does have tapeoca balls. A very delicious drink and a must try. While we were on this amazing trip we had some company.... It was none other than the Italian exchange students. We all had a blast but were tired when we got home. What a day!
Mostly Happy by Pam Bustin

Mostly Happy by Pam Bustin is an awesome book about a young girl seeking happiness through various obstacles in life. It is about a mother and her daughter Bean who go through different kinds of challenges and must overcome bad situations in their life since Bean's father leaves them. She grows up watching her mother being very involved in abusive relationships. She was always aware of her mother's relationships with the many different guys but never told her mom about her inner feelings about her interactions. She happily accepts her second father and her little new born sister. Furthermore, she fulfilled her responsibilities of taking care off them when her mother is not able to.
However, slowly she turns around from her hard time and decided to live a new life by herself. As she said in the text, "I spend half of my life yelling at God". The quote reveals that Bean wants to start a new life. It tells us that no matter how hard our past may be it is there is always time to embark in a new life for the good. Pam Bustin uses this novel and the character of Bean as a letter to the world and the people in it. She uses the determination and perseverance of Bean to show us that we can help ourselves. Things can ALWAYS change: but only if we want it to.
The best thing about this book is the ending. After all the heartache, the pain and the sorrow, Bean states, “God came”. Bean was able to find the hope and the courage to go on. She was glad “someone was in charge”. After running away from her problems her whole life Bean finds peace after the storm and finds the will to go home and help the people the storm has hurt. I think we all want a beautiful ending; this book shows us that we can.

Turn off your Lights and Help Support Earth Hour!
2:37 PM | Posted by Team2010

As many of you are aware, March 27th at 8:30 pm is Earth Hour and for those who don’t know about this special day, Earth hour is a day where you turn off all your electrical appliances for one hour. Although you can`t turn off all of your everyday appliances, you can do one thing to help support this cause. As a student, you can turn off all your lights for one hour and encourage your family members and friends to join you.
In 2007 Earth Hour began in Australia where many people turned off their lights for one hour. It is organized by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The intention of this was to raise awareness and fight against climate change. As we all know, our climate is drastically affected and is constantly being affected by us, humans. Earth Hour is intended to reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere and protect our planet for the future generations. We encourage everyone to participate in this global cause and help save the planet!

TDSB supports Canadian Red Cross and Free the Children for Haiti relief efforts
8:20 PM | Posted by Team2010

Story:
The news of the disastrous earthquake in Haiti has hit close to home for many of us in the TDSB community. As aid organizations work to determine the extent of damage in Port-au-Prince and the surrounding area, we recognize that the whereabouts of family, friends and relatives of many in our city and schools are still unknown.
Our sincere thoughts and hope go out to those directly affected by this tragedy and who anxiously await word from loved ones. As classmates, co-workers and friends, we share in your grief as we hear more and more details of the devastation.
Thus far, Canadian news agencies are reporting an estimated 3 million people have been immediately affected by the earthquake and thousands are feared dead. Friends and relatives in Canada seeking information on Canadian citizens believed to be in the affected area can contact Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada at 1-800-387-3124.
If you would like to help aid in the relief process, the TDSB is actively supporting the Canadian Red Cross and Free the Children.
The TDSB will be accepting donations on behalf of the two charities at each of its more than 590 schools and administrative centres for the relief efforts. As well, all schools and board sites will be lowering flags from Jan. 18 to 22 and observing a moment of silence on Jan. 18.Donations made to the Canadian Red Cross and Free The Children will be used to support the enormous humanitarian efforts in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and surrounding areas. Donations to the Canadian Red Cross will supply survivors with urgently needed food, shelter, water, and medical supplies. Donations made to Free The Children will allow the organization to oversee the distribution of medical supplies, emergency relief support and begin planning for long-term programs that will ensure children return to school as soon as possible.
"Many of our students and staff have family and friends who live in the devastated area," said Bruce Davis, Chair of the TDSB. "As a result, this loss is a personal one for all of us at the TDSB.”
“We are all one race – that is the human race. So I am asking our TDSB community to pull together to support the aid and recovery effort in any way you can. No donation is too small," said Chris Spence, Director of Education.
Students, staff and members of the public are invited to make a financial donation at any TDSB school during operating hours.

Please note that there is a special assembly to educate the students and staff about why it is so important to donate for the releif effort in Haiti, and exactly where your money goes. This assembly will be held in place of the clinic period on Friday January 22nd. Make sure that you attend it because it is truly for a good cause, and it shows how much you support the relief effort. Don' t forget that our school has a goal of donating $10, 000 and we are not even close! So show your support for those less fortunate than us by donating at least $5 and be sure to attend the assembly!
